Guess who I ran into?

In the evening after finishing up this week’s work, decided to go put in a few extra miles. Changed clothes in the trail bathroom and went in for the run. Somewhere in my second mile or so, I lifted by head and I thought I recognized the face of the runner who just passed me by the other way. Was it not Scott? I thought. Looked back but the runner kept on running.

For a few minutes, my mind meandered to thoughts about Scott. I had not seen for a long time. We used to work together. In fact, I wondered if he ever got my birthday wishes. It was his birthday a few days back and I had left a voice mail for him on his mobile phone. Made a mental note that I needed to shoot him an email to ensure that his phone number had not changed.

And that was that.

A few miles later, I turned around and was still a couple of miles away from my origin point, when I took a turn and ran into the same guy. This time, I was absolutely sure!! “Scott?”. “Rajib!”… We chatted for some time and I turned back again. We decided to run together to where he had kept his car and then he would drive me to where I had parked my car. In the meanwhile, we caught up on our lives.

After taking our mandatory picture together, I let him go. He was getting late in taking his parents out for dinner. Apparently, he takes his parents out for dinner almost every week. What a nice person!!

Cold Lake Michigan

Went for a run on the Waukegan beach this morning. It was cold as heck. The winds were high. I had three layers on, and the sun was up and clear. Still, after two miles decided to pull out – the toes were becoming too numb in the cold… it was a beautiful sight though on the desolate beach – if you could ignore the below freezing temperatures….

5 miles of slow run…

Took all the advise from Facebook friends today to see how the left leg would hold up. Raghu’s suggestion to slow down probably made the biggest difference. Slowed down to a 12 min/mile pace but stayed with the hills instead of the flat trails. Like Stephen and Grace suggested – did the full stretches and hot tub thing too. As much as I hate foam rollers, decided to try that too as Grace had suggested.

The run itself was not too problematic. The uphills were a little more stiffer that normal but overall, not an issue. At the end of the run, I realized I was stiff like I have been experiencing in the recent past.

But here is the good news. Doing a lot more stretching and the foam roller did get rid of most of the stiffness. The leg is definitely feeling better now.

I am thinking of taking a blood thinner for the next few days before any run. Also, I am going to change shoes to lot more cushioned ones. Got some good tips from my friend Bob VanderMeer.

10 miles in a cloudy day

The left leg is becoming increasing troublesome. In the second mile the part between the calf and the ankle stiffened up and started causing pain. Gave a break for two minutes and then tried slowing down, speeding up and all sorts of variations. All the muscles on the left – the glutes, quads, hams and calf are very stiff and sore. I get a feeling this is affecting my stride and soon might affect the knee or hips.

Anybody with running experience –  do you have any idea what to do (other than reducing miles that is). I am trying stretching and warm presses regularly.

On the good side, ran into the Colsons! I had not seen Chris in some three years or so!!

Second half marathon of the year

Technically it was a rest day for me today after the 10 mile run in the hills yesterday that entailed a total climb of 80 floors. Last evening though, I got a crazy idea. I am going to hit 51 soon. I started wondering how much can I push my body to endure at this age. Ergo, decided to join the Chalupa group for a run this morning instead of taking rest. At any point, if the body started complaining too much, I was going to pull over and walk back.

The first few miles were pretty enjoyable. Partially because I was distracted as Samaresh, Sanjib and Arup who were ahead of the pack with me kept talking and cracking jokes. By the time we came back to our starting point, we had already completed four miles. Went back to the trail to meet up Mrinal-da who was bringing up the rear guard of the group and gave him company all the way back. That made it five miles. But I sensed that I could push the body some more.

So, after the mandatory Chalupa group picture, instead of going for Starbucks with the rest of the team, I dove back into the trails. And that is when the “walk thru the desert” started. Without any company and the trail being near desolate on a cold and cloudy morning, I started losing tempo and motivation soon. The sixth mile was getting boring. The seventh one was very slow. On the eighth I could hear my feet dragging. And the left knee, occasionally, would sting a little.

Stopped at the end of the eighth mile. I was still two miles away from the starting point. Needed to do something to get motivated. Started stretching the left leg – especially the calf, quad and the hips. And waited for a runner to come by who I could then run along with. Not a single one came by after waiting two full minutes. So, tried a different approach. I do not like listening to music while running. I feel one should always be very alert while running in trails. But I got the iPhone out and started a Noorani sisters’ song.

The booming voice of Jyoti started with the “Chan kithey gujaari aayi”. Not that I was too sure myself where I had gone but the quick beats of the song got me back to a faster pace. And as I ran faster, I realized that the muscles were complaining lesser. I guess the repetitive stress points had shifted to other parts of the muscles. And just like that, very soon, I was back to the starting point. 10 miles down.

My stupidity usually is boundless. Having done 10 miles, the next idea came – how about a half marathon (13.1 miles)? While I was energized by the last two miles mentally, physically I was starving. My entire food intake in the morning was a cup of coffee. Thought for a second and then went back to the car, retrieved the apple that I had kept for post-run recovery and post-run be darned, quickly devoured the apple. Almost immediately regretted it. I started feeling the cramps as a penalty for eating too quickly and not keeping myself hydrated adequately.

If I sat down, the cramps would increase. My best shot was to try and power it thru by staying distracted. All I needed to do is get to the one and a half mile marker somehow. If I could do that, regardless of how I came back – limping, dragging the left foot or even walking, it would be a half marathon distance. I went for negative splits. First half at 10 min/mile. Second one I speeded up to 9:30 and the third half went for a 9:00 min/mile. Good news? I was so breathless that I never once worried about the cramps.

Slowed down on the return journey and just the thought that I was a few minutes away from a half marathon run was enough motivation to finish up the rest of it. That 13 miles and change makes it 31 miles for this month. The math oriented ones probably realize this already – 13 and 31 are not only reverses of each other – their squares are reverses of themselves too!!

Now, one problem though: Everywhere I go, all the local Atlantans are greeting me and each other with a big “Rise Up” scream. And I am, like, “Dude! I can barely sit down now. What do yo mean Rise Up”? 🙂

That was my running track yesterday…

Like I mentioned in my previous post, I had an interesting running track. On my left was a sharp drop of 100 feet in to the beach below. On my right was the railway track. Ever so often one of those double decker Caltrain trains would speed by. And in between the edge of the cliff and the railway track was enough space – filled with stones to stabilize the tracks – for me to run along.

The stones were a little painful. But the constant watch out for an approaching train and the staying safely away from the sheer drop was enough to keep the mind focused away from the pain. Just when I was wondering how stupid the whole idea might have been, I came across another runner from the other side.

She must have been as relieved to see me as was I. She spontaneously high fived me as we stepped aside a little to make space for each other. One of those “runner” highs, no doubt. That said, I shall try to keep these kind of runs to a minimum.
