We meet again!

Little did I realize on that March afternoon 42 years back as I left my school for the last time, that this morning will happen to me someday. While most teachers have had an undeniable effect on me, the three that left the most indelible mark were my English teacher Ms. Biswas, my Math teacher Mr. Roy and my Geography teacher Ms. Bhowmic.

It probably starts to explain then why I still dash off a handwritten letter every weekend or why when bored, instead of watching reels, I look for geometry problems on the internet or why I can spend hours poring over a map of the world trying to learn which country borders which – all with absolutely no gnawing sense of misplaced priorities.

Quirky as they might seem to the world, they almost define my identity.

It was with incredible luck that I found myself with my English teacher this morning in Asheville, NC. She was visiting her son. I simply could not pass up that opportunity to spend a few more moments with her (and her husband Arup Sir!). If not for anything else, but to at least express my gratitude for instilling a sense of intellectual curiosity in me during my formative years.

That, plus there are not too many folks with who I can remember weird names like “Hermia” and “Hippolyta” with some pangs of nostalgia, sitting out on a brisk morning over some breakfast and coffee!

Raghu!! After 36 years!!

Raghu and I were in the same hostel 1985-1989. That is 40 years back!! The last time I had seen him was in 1989 when we graduated. I have kept up with him over the phone but never had a chance to meet him.

Alu (also from the same hostel) and his family joined Raghu and his family and myself at a nice Indian restaurant. Which reminded me of the Yamuna hotel on Mount Road (in Madras) that Raghu and I used to frequent often during our engineering days.

Another great comeback from the waiter/waitress

Do you remember the story of the young waitress who had come back with a memorable response to my “A million dollars would help” when she had asked if we wanted anything else after serving us? Or the other time when another waitress actually came back after drawing a million dollar bill on a piece of paper?

Well, we had another great one today.

We had docked the boat and walked up to Fish Tales to catch some food and drinks. Aidan was the young and very friendly gentleman who was helping us. After the four of us had finished, he came and asked if it was going to be one check.

There were four of us. To throw him off balance, I said “No, we will split evenly – five ways”!! Usually, that gets a laughter all around and creates some bon homie. And Aidan laughed his heart out too.

After about a few minutes, he showed up. With 5 checks neatly clipped to five clipboards and five pens.

I was totally confused.

“Wait, Aidan. What are you doing? I was kidding.”

And then he laughed more. There was really one check. He had simply printed out four more copies of the check to fool me.

He had me good there.

Made it a memorable dinner. I need to go back there again!!

Have you ever heard of anybody like this?

“So, why did you guys choose to visit New Orleans?” I asked Madhumolli.

That lead to a fascinating revelation about her. I discovered that she has a very unique hobby. She collects water from different rivers in the world!! She has gone to different countries to collect water from rivers like Volga, Nile and the like. This trip was to add Mississippi water to her collection.

That was jaw dropping. I have never heard of anybody with such a unique passion. Have you?

Is there an English word for people who collect water rivers from different parts of the world?

This was the weekend of coincidences and intersection points

Sharmila and I hail from Durgapur, a small town in India. There were two separate weddings we got invited to on the same day this weekend. Both of them were of kids of two friends of ours. One in Dallas and one in Atlanta. Both of them are also from the same small town of Durgapur. And get this… both their mothers and our mothers – all four of them were teachers in the same school!

Sharmila got to attend one of them and I attended the other one.

Funnily enough, at the wedding I attended (the Dallas one), I ran into a guy (Santanu) who was Sharmila’s classmate in engineering school and I further got introduced to his wife Tapasi. Who, we found out is the first cousin of our good friend (Sudipto) Ghose Sugo in Atlanta.

To roll back time a little, before I met Sudipto in Atlanta in 2007, I had actually first run into him in my senior year in residential school – way back in 1984. He was a junior in the same school and I used to meet him while visiting his roommate in his dorm. That other roommate was a junior of mine from Durgapur and we knew each other from the elementary school there.

To round up all the bizarre coincidences… that room mate junior I mentioned? Kuntal is his name and he lives in San Jose, California and yeah, he was also there in that wedding in Dallas!!

My friends from America are perfectly justified in thinking that it is a myth that India has 1.5 Billion people!!
