What was that again?

I will not mention who the subject of this story is – for, like most others, I value my life too – but it was too hilarious not to share.

It was a Sunday afternoon – and like most Sunday afternoons, I was going around doing my business – which means mostly doing maintenance work inside and outside the house and cleaning and organizing stuff. Since the temperatures were a little better, I decided to clean up the garage.

Soon, I noticed a lot of clutter – including shoe boxes lying around. I was almost going to throw them into the garbage when I realized that they actually had shoes inside. Opened a box – and there was a nice pair of running shoes inside. And “nice” to me, means flashy colors 🙂

Of course, worried that *somebody* might have forgotten about them, I went inside the house and had this conversation with her:

Me: “Did you know that your new running shoes are lying around in the garage?”
*Somebody*: “I know. I have not found a matching shirt to buy yet. ”
Me (totally confused): “Ok. So why are the new shoes lying around in the garage? Why are they not in the closet where you keep your shoes?”
*S*: I have run out space for more shoes.

I returned to the task of cleaning up the garage wondering what the hell am I thinking taking a year off from work….

Chalupa run!

Today’s group included two of our youngest members and two more in the junior group. Not sure what happened to the rest of the adults. I know one of them is in a mourning period after the Saints loss. Others are probably recovering from parties!! 🙂

Nikispeak again

First thing that happened to me this morning:
Niki: Dad, wake up! It is nearly 6.
Me: Why are you awake? (She still has some jetlag)
Niki: I have been awake since 3:45
Me: What? You are going to be in trouble in school.
Niki: Relax dad! I am planning to sleep during Social Studies!!

I think sometimes she forgets that she is still 9 years old.

Survived!!!

5K run in windchill driven -7degree F. (-22 degree Celsius). The biggest difficulty was not the cold – although the wind was nasty – it was my glasses. My breath escaped thru the mask and froze on the glasses. In the end, I was barely seeing thru a small hole in one glass. The other had ice particles on it!!! (See pic)

The Starbucks lady admonished me that I was crazy to go out and run today. I sheepishly offered that it would be boring if everybody was sane. Somebody has to do the crazy stuff.

So she wrote down “Insane Guy” on my cup and gave the coffee free!!!

If this was a big public race and I had posted a big achievement, I would be thanking everybody now. Especially my wife, who, unlike my daughters egged me on to post a personal record. Coming to think of it, this egging on might have something to do with the fact that last night she realized that she had run out milk and eggs and my Starbucks is next to her grocery store. 🙂

Hmmmm…. 🙂

Is that the moon?

Last night Sharmila and I were in bed watching a sitcom on TV before going off to sleep when I noticed something small and shiny thru the master bedroom windows in the trees. I was trying to figure out whether it was a reflection of a light inside our house that I was seeing on the window or was it moonlight shining on some ice formation on the twigs. I straightened up and asked Sharmila – “Is that the moon”? And then for good measure threw in “Or is that your face”?

You know you have been married for twenty one years by how romantic values cede precedence to practical values. Sharmila looked at my face and the direction in which I was looking and then looking outside, said “What do you mean? How can my face be over there?”

I almost fell off my bed, guffawing! 🙂

(BTW, when teased later, her defense was it was not a full moon :-). Go figure!)

Attempt at a personal record

Tomorrow morning in Milton it is going to be 6 degrees F – with windchill -7 degrees F. ( -22 degrees Celsius). I am going to attempt a 5K run to post my personal coldest run of my career. Previous record was nearly 12 degrees F warmer. (It has to be minimum 5K to qualify). I know this is nothing compared to what my friends in Chicago and New York are going thru. I am glad I am not having to run there!!

They say two layers of clothing in the 30s/40s and then an additional layer for every 10 degrees. By that calculation, I will be wearing five layers of clothes to run tomorrow. I think it will be less of running and more of waddling like penguins with outstretched arms 🙂
