Running…

So here is a puzzle that occurred to me while running yesterday (I know, I know, I need to get a life 🙂 ) Two runners start from point A and run at uniform (but different from each other) speeds to a point B exactly a mile apart and run back and keep doing this till they meet at either end (A or B). If their speeds are “m” mins/mile and “n” mins/mile (m not equal to n, and m and n are whole integers), how would you find out after how many minutes will they meet (they stop if they meet at A or B)?

That should teach me not to mess with a teenager :-)

This morning, I overheard Natasha (14 years) talking to her mom about some friend of hers breaking up with her boyfriend. I was half following the conversation when I heard her say “.. Boys are so mushy mushy”. In a valiant effort to defend my brethren, I immediately threw the penalty flag and engaged myself in the conversation. “What do mean boys are mushy mushy”, I ventured to ask. The response, befitting any self righteous teenager (which I think means all of them ), was swift and garrulous 🙂 The flurry of words ended with something like “… He was overdoing the boyfriend thing”. Not to be cowed down, I pressed on

I: “How do you know when he is “overdoing” it?”.

Tasha: “Well, when the boy becomes possessive”.

I: “All boys become possessive of their girlfriends. I know I was”.

Tasha: “And see how well they turned out for you”.

Touche!

[Mentally, I was like “Dang it, Rajib, next time stick to engaging in verbal duels with Nikita (8 years). You cannot out speak a teenager and it is absolutely pointless to do so with the wife anyways. Invariably it will end with a sigh and a “Fine” which means you have inevitably reached the point where it is anything but” :-)]

Vibha 2012 Race

Ran the 5K Vibha Dream Mile Race today. Our Sunday morning Bengali crowd was there – Samaresh and Paroma, Amitesh and Sharmila joined in the 5K race. As did Gouranga and Sudipta ! Youngster Paroma ranked high enough to win a award (I missed the ceremony though). Esha, Sreya, Mistu and Anusuya did the 5K walk.

That was one hilly route. Made the mistake of starting fast (7:31min/mile pace). Had to slow down to finish off at 8:02 min/mile pace average. (24 min 29 secs).

14th Vibha Dream Mile Atlanta Run 2012

Ran the second race this quarter at Vibha. First Vibha 5K run for me. Sharmila also came for the run. As did Amitesh, Samaresh, Paroma, Sudipta and Gourango. Anusuya, Esha, Sreya and Mistu came for the 5K walk.
I ran too fast in the first mile (7:31 pace). Had to slow down in the last two – the hills did not make it any easierâ€Ļ finished wit 24:29 time. Have not seen the official results yet.

I guess I deserved that..

My flight this morning was horribly late and I gave up all hopes of going back home to change and went straight to office in jeans and my printed shirt (see pic) to some hilarious effects.
The classiest one was from Dudley – “Boss, the 70s called. They want their shirt back” 🙂

Fill in the blanks

Usually, I fly home on Thursdays. This time I am flying out on Thursday. Nonetheless, puzzle time. Fill in the dashes with the digits 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 so that the equality stands. (the evaluation is done strictly from left to right – so 6 – 2 x 3 = 12 and not 0).

_ + _ – _ x _ / _ x _ = 50

Sunday morning run – Roys and Mukherjees

Since we came back home late last night, it was decided that I will join the Sunday morning run but let Nikita and Sharmila sleep in. This morning as I was putting my running clothes on, eight year old Nikita sprang from her bed and said she will come out. Sharmila and I were concerned that she might not have rested well but she was adamant she will come out – even after I told her that her best friend was not going to join today.

I was impressed by her energy – so I switched back from running shoes to walking shoes and Sharmila also decided to join us. Amitesh, Samaresh and Paroma came and they ran with Sharmila for 5K. Nikita and I walked for 2.5K. Met Lara from our running group at the Greenway.

During the walk, Nikita asked me when do I get up for my run on weekdays, how much do I run and when do I finish. I was getting excited that she might want to come out on some weekdays too. So, I answered her questions and then asked “Why, what are you thinking?”. She said “Nothing. Just making polite conversation”!!

So, that was that!!! 🙂 🙂
