Reading letters from friends by the light of a “hurricane lantern”. Of course, those days, the lantern was forced on us due to power cuts (“loadshedding”). This one is a LED one. Those days, letters were mostly from friends within 100 kms. These days, they are all international pen pals.

Sunday evening routine. Relaxing at the local coffee shop going thru the letters received from pen pals around the world. This one was a particularly interesting one from a couple – Dale and Sue – from near Melbourne.

Learnt a lot of trivia about Australia!! I am no more afraid of wearing thongs to the beaches in Sydney!! (Google it up – what do thongs mean in Australia)

This one is to my most consistent pen friend. We write frequently enough that I do not need to go back to the letters to remember what conversation we were having. Both of us are into fountain pens!!

I had talked about how, ever since I started having pen pals again, I am able to regularly write letters every weekend . Yet another upside is sitting down with the letters from the week over a cup of coffee and read them intently. First, there is always some very interesting aspects of stationery, ink, pen, decorations and the like. Second, the different people have so many different life stories, interests and insights!!

Just observing how different people in different parts of the world number their pages is an intriguing study!

I am staying more disciplined in writing letters every weekend. This one is headed to Japan.

Since Sharmila was not at home, tried something new today. Grabbed my letter writing stuff and went to my favorite bar (Chiringa), found an empty table and started writing to two of my penpals while sipping some wine.

The environment is less Chiringa, more Cheers for me. Where everybody knows my name, And they are always glad I came …

Loved the white noise around me, the occasional chat with Lauren and Rebekah, the waving at Charlotte, Susan and Logan when they swung by while finishing some letters headed to Europe and Argentina.

Received a unique letter from a pen pal in Switzerland. Very creative. Gave me some fillip to write down some thoughtful responses…

The idea was to go to a coffee shop and catch up on some reading. While fishing for the iPad in my bag, I realized I had a writing pad and a fountain pen too.

Good enough excuse to write a letter to a pen-pal – a young gentleman from Argentina!!
