The old man riseth..
After four days straight of being in bed, I am finally able to get up today. But then, after four straight days of not eating much, I am walking like I will be walking when I am 80 – one slow step at a time, holding to anything I can reach… with my trembling fingers. On that last point, learnt today why non-trembling fingers are a huge asset – especially in the context of cutting fingernails! Ouch!! π
We are the lions!
I do not think I am under the weather….
To understand my attitude towards medicine, you have to take into consideration three things:
1. I come from a long line of hypochondriacs. For example, when the doctor tells my dad during a visit that he does not think he is a hypochondriac, my dad thinks that is the GOOD NEWS!! π
2. In India, everybody is a freelance doctor. Very few have medicine degrees but everybody has an opinion on what is the required cure. (you do not need a prescription for most medicine in India). Any trace of a symptom rearing its head will be mercilessly squelched by a plethora of medicines as a preventive measure π Every time I go to India, my brother, for example will shove Amoxicilins by the scores (and they are dirt cheap in India) in my bag for Sharmila’s annual strep throat attack.
3. I love being a contrarian and like people who sponsor and seek contrarian thoughts.
With the end result that, I usually stay away from most medicines if I can help it. My excuse code is – let the immunity system figure it out first.
But today, even I, after a long 12-15 year hiatus, got sick and tired of being in bed for four days and succumbed to my brother. Took out one of those antibiotic tablets he sends for Sharmila and popped it. I called him and told him of the unthinkable I have done and also said that since I never take medicine, I figured, one will do the magic. He said something derogatory about life not being math and that I should have three a day for three days. I told him I will do so when he produces his Doctor’s certificate π
But I do realize that for me to pop an antibiotic, I am no more under the weather. I am clearly and squarely under the climate now π

Caught in the middle!!
There is at least one person who tonight will be extremely torn after the Super Bowl. And that is Mrs. Harbaugh π Β She cannot possibly show too much happiness nor too much sadness !!!
To a lesser extent, Jay Harbaugh – 23-year old son of 49-ers’ head coach Jim Harbaugh will be in somewhat of a same predicament. He works for his uncle Raven’s head coach John Harbaugh as part of video and strength staff!!!
The difficult..
Easier one…
Puzzle time: The last puzzle given by my brother in law – I am still trying to decipher the answer from three of my friends – one of whom is the brainy-types and has changed his mind thrice….
But today is Thursday and I should be flying home…. so here is one that is easier …
How do you get 100 using one “1” and four “7”s. You can use plus, minus, multiple, divide symbols and parentheses.
e.g. 177-77
Now give me another answer…
If you have cracked it, send me PM. I will recognize you publicly…

Engineering Skills
Unintentional 7.5K run in Chateau Γlan. The story is to “die for” π Originally, the idea was to run through the neighborhood behind the winery for 5K. Somewhere in the hills in the dark, I took a wrong turn and found myself on a State Highway and by now 5K away from where I needed to be. It was a single lane highway with no median and barely any shoulder to run on.
Throwing caution to the wind, I just ran on the highway (on the left side so I could see oncoming traffic). A ferocious looking dog that had greeted me about a mile back might have something to do with the decision π Judging by the reaction of the drivers, they are not used to seeing runners on that highway π
At one point, after running downhill, I faced a long bridge with absolutely no side space to run on. So, I had to clear the bridge before any oncoming car could enter the bridge.
I summoned all my engineering skills – estimated the length of the bridge, knew my speed, estimated the vehicle’s speed, adjusted for the fact they will accelerate as they hurtled downhill on the other side of the bridge and estimated the point on the road other side of the bridge which was the cut off point (I had to make sure no car had crossed that point). Finally found an opportunity where the next car was beyond that point and I ran like the wind…
And met the car about half way into the bridge π
She was kind enough to move over to the wrong side lane. And I ran the rest of the distance mumbling to myself “One minute is 60 seconds; not 100. One minute is 60 seconds…” π
