Rome Trip 2026

  1. Walking by ourselves in Rome Apr 29, 2026

Went to the hotel from the airport, but the room was not ready. So, we took a shower in the spa, dumped the suitcases and headed for a walk. The hotel is right in the middle of downtown. In about four minutes of walk, we reached the Trevi Fountain. We were here last in 2015 with the two daughters and the Roy family from Dallas!

  2. Next we reached the area of Trajan’s Column Apr 29, 2026

It was cool in the shade but fairly warm in the sun. This thing has survived for nearly two thousand years!

  3. Monument to Victor Emmanuel II Apr 29, 2026

The very first king of unified Italy.

  4. Trajan’s Forum (the remains) Apr 29, 2026

This was the last archaelogical site we could go to before Sharmila had to head out to see the Sistine Chapel. I went back to my room to go for a walking tour with some of my colleagues.

  5. Obelisk to Marcus Aurelius Apr 29, 2026

The famous emperor whose writings on Meditations have been read all over the world.

  6. Rome is the city of obelisks Apr 29, 2026

I had to look it up. It has thirteen of them! Needless to say, more than any other city. This one is the Obelisk of Montecitorio. This was originally made in Aswan (Egypt) and brought in from there!

  7. Doria Pamphilj Gallery – our venue to dinner tonight Apr 29, 2026

  8. Meanwhile, in Alpharetta Apr 29, 2026

So, here we are in Rome, doing, somewhat expectedly, what Romans do. Eating too much, walking everywhere, pretending to understand Italian menus.

Meanwhile, back home, Jay Jay has apparently decided to live his local life uninterrupted. He dragged our poor dog sitter all the way to downtown Alpharetta and, with single-minded determination, marched straight into Chiringa – our local bar – and parked himself right next to his usual spot.

The Chiringa crew (Mae featured here) has been sending us photo updates.

This dog is not to be trusted.

  9. The Pantheon Plaza was very busy Apr 30, 2026

We went for a walk around in the city today before leaving

  10. The Pantheon Apr 30, 2026

  11. Gran Cafe Marcel Apr 30, 2026

One of Sharmila’s art friend had recommended visiting this artist Marcel who makes various things – like – scarves with his paintings on them. We found the place and the artist!!

  12. Yet another obelisk in Rome! Apr 30, 2026

  13. The Tiber river Apr 30, 2026

  14. Palazzo di Giustizia (Palace of Justice) on the other side of Tiber Apr 30, 2026

This houses the Supreme Court of Italy
