Luxembourg Trip 2026

  1. This plane better have no maintenance problems Oct 4, 2026

Back on a plane, to knock off a couple of countries together. I changed into my night clothes the moment I got to my seat. The plan is to fall asleep as soon as we take off. Skip dinner and breakfast (have to admit Air France does have some good wine, which I will be sad to miss) and be totally fresh when I land on the other side of the pond.

That is the plan. Now, if the plane decides to have a maintenance problem and we are offloaded, I will be in big trouble. PJs and a nightshirt do not mix well with the airport boarding area or the SkyClub lounges!

  2. First sight in the morning Oct 5, 2026

Woke up blithe as a lark, as P. B. Shelley would have fancied. The no-food, no-drink, sleep-through-the-night-on-the-plane strategy seems to have worked well.

I pulled up the shade and there stood the Eiffel Tower, tall above the clouds, while Paris below was still not out of its slumber.

  3. At Paris de l’est station to head out to Luxembourg Oct 5, 2026

  4. First high speed train in Europe for me Oct 5, 2026

Sharmila has done the same on her trip from London to Paris with Nikita. For me, this would be the first high-speed train in Europe. And the fourth time crossing a country border by train – Denmark to Sweden, Germany to Austria, Austria to Hungary, Monaco to France, and now France to Luxembourg.

We will hit 200mph for most of the high-speed rail section between Paris and Metz.

  5. Our trip to Luxembourg commenceth Oct 5, 2026

  6. Zipping thru rural France Oct 5, 2026

View from the pantry car in the train.

  7. Luxembourg by foot Oct 5, 2026

We reached Luxembourg station, and the Marriott was less than a 5-minute walk! After freshening up and getting pointers from the hotel staff, we hit the road to check out the local sights on foot.

  8. Checking out the local scenes Oct 5, 2026

  9. Quaint tunnel Oct 5, 2026

Seems like that is a regular road going thru it. I think those are medians on the road that one can see…

  10. The beautiful La Passerelle Bridge Oct 5, 2026

Loved it when the trains would pass on it.

  11. View from Chemin de la Corniche Oct 5, 2026

Also called “the most beautiful balcony of Europe”. You can see La Passerelle bridge in the background. Below is the neighborhood of Grund.

  12. That is an intereting piece of architecture! Oct 5, 2026

  13. The township of Grund Oct 5, 2026

I didn’t realize at all that Luxembourg City sits on a big rock. With steep cliffs. At the bottom of the cliff is the Alzette River, and then the township of Grund in the valley. The views from the cliff are beautiful, and there are innumerable footpaths going up and down the cliffs!

This might explain why folks in Luxembourg seem to be so fit!!

  14. One more view from the Vista Point Oct 5, 2026

  15. The fall colors are almost starting here in Luxembourg Oct 5, 2026

  16. Check out the cliffs on which the city of Luxembourg sits Oct 5, 2026

I believe this is called Rocher du Bock. Those openings into the sheer face are actually tunnels inside. We will go inside tomorrow.

  17. In the town square – Place d’Armes Oct 5, 2026

This is a must have feature of every European city.

  18. Another must have in an European city – a statue in the Townsquare Oct 5, 2026

  19. Drinks and dinner at the city center Oct 5, 2026

Wrapping up our first day in Luxembourg. Discovered something new – non-alcoholic Orange Spritz. Tasted pretty much like the Aperol Spritz.

  20. Off to explore the city early in the morning Oct 6, 2026

  21. View of the city below Oct 6, 2026

Took the tram and got off at Theater. All public transport is free in Luxembourg. Walked for some distance to reach the Panoramic Elevator. Except that we found out it was closed for maintenance. This is a view from the top.

  22. View of the Pont Grande-Duchesse Charlotte Oct 6, 2026

That would be the bridge behind her 🙂

  23. The Pont Grande-Duchesse Charlotte in full glory Oct 6, 2026

  24. Taking a break from all the walking Oct 6, 2026

Also grabbing lunch before exploring the tunnels

  25. Palais Grand-Ducal Oct 6, 2026

Surprising fact about Luxembourg – instead of king and queen as monarchy, they have Duke and Duchess!

  26. The ever present cobblestone streets in every European city Oct 6, 2026

  27. Walk to the tunnel Oct 6, 2026

GPS took us in a round about way and made us climb down the hill and back up again!

  28. Casemates du Bock Oct 6, 2026

The tunnels up there have been built into the side face of the cliffs

  29. The sheer face of the limestone rocks Oct 6, 2026

This is at Casemates du Boch

  30. Another beautiful bridge – Pont du château Oct 6, 2026

This connects the Casemates du Boch to the city center.

  31. Inside the tunnels of Casemates Du Boch Oct 6, 2026

  32. Exploring the tunnels Oct 6, 2026

  33. View of the Pont Grande-Duchesse Charlotte from inside the tunnel Oct 6, 2026

  34. Gibraltar of the North Oct 6, 2026

Luxembourg often was called the Gibraltar of the North due to the labyrinthine tunnels that were use for defense.

  35. View into the city thru the porthole in a cliff Oct 6, 2026
