Scene from “Alien”?

Well, I watch no movies whatsoever. But when I showed this shot of the Marriott Marquis hotel I took from the atrium, my friend Mark’s first comment was “Doesn’t this remind you of the scene from Alien”? I truthfully replied in the negative 🙂

Meeting my namesake. Certainly the smarter version!!

In all the weariness of last week’s travels, I forgot to reflect on and tell you folks about meeting a very very old friend of mine. I saw him after thirty years!!!

My namesake – although he spells it “Rajeev” – and I went to school together for our eleventh and twelfth grades (high school junior and senior years). I remember him as an exceptionally bright person. He was very strong in math and statistics. I used to marvel at how he cracked the permutation and combination problems. And another thing I remember him for was his handwriting. He had a great handwriting – very consistent and clean – but the font size was geared towards letting people read from hundred yards or so away 🙂 (We had a great laugh remembering that). And I also remember visiting his parents in Asansol for a few hours. I distinctly remember his mom’s energy level and kindness.

During last week’s “breakfast in DC – lunch in Milwaukee – dinner in Tampa” whirlwind meetings crisscrossing the country, I was able to get my old buddy Rajeev Ranjan Bhattacharya and myself together for an hour or so in DC – where he has moved in a couple of months back. I could have picked him up from a crowd very easily. Nothing has changed in him. He looks exactly the same. He has got all the hair intact on his head. Probably quietened down a little. But still has those insightful comments that I had gotten used to from him thirty years back.

It was great to catch up on his family, his career in Australia and US and some of our old friends. The most sad part was realizing that I will not get a chance to meet his mom again.

I do wish I had a paper and pen with me. I wanted to see if his handwriting has remained the same!!

A little hard labor on Labor Day

Chalupa runners wanted to take advantage of a Labor Day holiday and put in an extra run at our normal trail. Except, when we showed up, everything was shut down for a scheduled race. We went to a different trail nearby. It was a nice trail but very hilly. In Samaresh’s words, “Se ki Up. Baap-re baap” 🙂
Put in 5K before the group showed up and another 5K with the group. Apart from our usual suspects, we had our visiting runner Arka from Alabama and quite a few of our youngsters – Uma, Niki, Raya and Pooja. Pooja, as always, pushed me hard. We clipped the first mile at abut 7:30 min/mile.

His last Sunday Chalu-pa meeting

After going for a walk with the Chalu-pa runners every Sunday for a few months before he broke his hip, my father-in-law finally arrived at the last Sunday before he leaves for India. I skipped my run so that I could take him to join the rest of the Chalu-pa group for the customary coffee after run. He walked in hobbling with his stick just as the rest of the group settled down after the run… Was a good last Sunday “adda”!

That is enough damage for one day

Trying to fix this nagging issue I have that my FB comments are not getting pulled into my blogsite, I became over-adventurous today. Forgot the good old mantra – if it is not hurting you, leave it alone. Deleted a cross posting app and voila – all my old Facebook posts are gone!!! And it comes with a helpful feature – you cannot undelete! Arrgh! I manually reposted about 20 latest ones back.

If anyone of you care to see my old posts, you can always see it in my blog http://www.rajibroy.com. I have put in a calendar widget and an Archives widget that should help you navigate chronologically. Also, if you want to get to know of my updates, feel free to put in your email id on my blog – you will be notified whenever I put in a new entry.

Meanwhile, I am going to put a stiff drink in my glass and swear off my computer for some time 🙁 Maybe, I will start filling up those hospital and insurance forms with paper and pen 🙂
