It has been a minute since my last beat

Sat down with the dog for a Ghazal evening. On the player was Ghulam Ali. This one was penned by Hafiz Hoshiarpuri.

Tamam-e-umr tera intezaar humne kiya,
Is intezaar mein kis kis se pyaar humne kiya
Talash-e-dost ko ik umr chahiye ai dost,
Ki ek umr tera intezaar humne kiya
Tere khayal mein dil shaadman raha barson,
Tere huzoor ise sogawaar humne kiya
Ye tishnagi hai ki unse qareeb rehkar bhi,
‘Hafeez’ yaad unhe bar bar humne kiya

Roughly translated (improvements welcome)…

All my life I have waited for her
And in that wait, Heaven knows who all I have loved
It takes a whole life to find your true love, I know
And I have waited a whole life for her
My heart was happy to be lost in her thoughts in her absence
Now in her presence, somehow, it is forced to be sorrowful
Such is my longing for her that even being next to her
Hafiz, I kept remembering and yearning for her

Relaxing with some Manna Dey tracks

“হৃদয়ের গান শিখে তো গায় গো সবাই
কজনা হৃদয় দিয়ে গাইতে জানে
নয়নে কাজল সে তো সবাই পরে
কজনা তোমার মত চাইতে জানে”

Roughly translated..

“Many learn the songs of the heart,
But who can sing them as you do?
All line their eyes with kohl each day,
But who can cast a glance as you do?”

A musical evening!

ভালোবেসে, সখী, নিভৃতে যতনে
আমার নামটি লিখো– তোমার
মনের মন্দিরে।
আমার পরানে যে গান বাজিছে
তাহার তালটি শিখো– তোমার
চরণমঞ্জীরে॥
ধরিয়া রাখিয়ো সোহাগে আদরে
আমার মুখর পাখি– তোমার
প্রাসাদপ্রাঙ্গণে॥
মনে ক’রে সখী, বাঁধিয়া রাখিয়ো
আমার হাতের রাখী– তোমার
কনককঙ্কণে॥
আমার লতার একটি মুকুল
ভুলিয়া তুলিয়া রেখো– তোমার
অলকবন্ধনে।
আমার স্মরণ শুভ-সিন্দুরে
একটি বিন্দু এঁকো– তোমার
ললাটচন্দনে।
আমার মনের মোহের মাধুরী
মাখিয়া রাখিয়া দিয়ো– তোমার
অঙ্গসৌরভে।
আমার আকুল জীবনমরণ
টুটিয়া লুটিয়া নিয়ো– তোমার
অতুল গৌরবে॥
