Gem from Akbar Ilahabadi !

(Unbelievably enough, he was a sessions judge at Allahabad High Court at the turn of the twentieth century).

“Udhar zulfon mein kangi ho rahi hai, kham nikalta hai
Idhar ruk ruk key, khnich khnich key hamara dam nikalta hai
Ilahi khair ho, uljhan pe uljhan parti jati hai

Like Divine Word poetry cannot be translated. Lost in translation. The tragedy of all religions and all mankind therefore.

I was misremembering that Jagjit sang this sher. Thank you, now I remember it was indeed Ghulam Ali and as Rajib Roy said Hum ko kis ke gham ne mara. Now I’ll see if I can find a video

RajibDa you are spot on ! Humko kiske gum be Mara !

“kham” is the ball of hair that comes out loose from a women’s head (especially with long hair) after a thorough combing…
