Teenage-speak
Last night, I volunteered to take my teenager daughter to the football game in her old high school. On the way there, I made an attempt to see if I could wean her away from the constant earbuds-in-her-ears mode and have an actual conversation with her.
First I got the car radio on her favorite channel and then started talking about shoes, hairstyles, her girlfriends etc. Things picked up surprisingly well. They were going well enough that at one point of time I decided to start teasing her about boys.
So I went “how about
She: “Yeah, what about him”?
Me: “I thought you thought he looked cute”
She: “He did”
Me: “And….. What happened?”
She: “Puberty happened. That messed up everything”
Me: AWKWARD SILENCE for a long time.
She went back to her earbuds-in-her-ears π π
Sometimes, I think she does this purposely to shut me up. If that is true, she is spending waaaay too much time with her mother π π
Still trying to picture you discussing shoes and hairstyles…:)
You are lucky that you can have some kind of conversation. Try that on a 15 year old boy.. I have long given up and took shelter of NPR instead.
Al, my opening line was – if you had hundred dollars to buy shoes, what shoe would it be? Her response – can I have fifty dollars more?
Deb, interestingly, my younger one is interested in Car Talk and Wait Wait Don’t Tell me!!!
You got it right Rajib!!!1
Feel like these conversations are doors to their beautiful world , while probably you got in, but the bouncer kicked you out, I’ll keep trying. Anytime I am in the car with my pumpkin , I try to be cool π
Rajib->Accept it “She has good brains”
Teenage daughter already! You’ve got to be kidding me.
Sudipto, what do you mean you try to be cool? I thought being cool comes naturally to you without trying?
Trey, 15 year old !!! Amazing how time passes…
Joyjit, I have accepted that. Further, I have also accepted that he got those from the dad’s side π
Rajib da, she is really smart!
Rajib, that is a real “Oh Boy!” moment.
Se story here with our 17 yr old… You tried but Partha Choudhury has given up….
Only thing missing is her dismissive tone
Rajib, don’t give up like Partha. Have patience..like their mom do
Rajib->It is nice you accepted, about the source, I guess I need to consult Sharmila, Iam sure she will stake her claim. Also I would remember this post for reuse a few years down the line.
Rajib da – she surely knows how to win a conversation, she’s your daughter after all ! π
