Run in rain

5 mile run in Florida on A1A by the beach. In thunderstorm and torrential rain!! Had the time of my life.
When I started, the ominous dark clouds had already started moving in. After I completed the first mile, the temperatures started dropping rapidly and the wind started howling. The clouds were coming from the northwest and rapidly started enveloping the sky and then the ocean.
The beach was a beautiful sight. The palm trees were in unison bent in the same direction as if to let the wind know which way to go. The beach goers were scrambling back the other way and dragging on the sand their children and belongings alike.
Within minutes, a loud cloudburst announced the arrival of sharp rain and occasional thunders. The road cleared out very quickly. Now that I had the whole road to myself, I did what every self respecting 46 year old would do.
I ran in the middle of the road, stepped on every single puddle that had formed (and if I missed any, I went back and stepped on it) and stuck my tongue out to taste the rain. At one point, I got a huge shout out from some spring breakers stuck in a second floor bar. I doffed my cap to them and discovered how great the sharp rain felt on my shaved head. I never put the cap back!!
Finally, I pulled up near the hotel after five miles, in front of a bunch of amused hotel guests waiting for their ride to come in the rain. Carefully I wrung out the water from the socks and cap on the side and walked in barefoot, totally drenched, water drops marking the way I walked with my shoes in my hand, casually like nothing had happened πŸ™‚
There is a Starbucks in the hotel. Right now, it has a coffee cup with my name written all over it… πŸ™‚

We ran Deep!

7 mile run under an hour with my good old friend Deepanjan visiting from Shanghai. We were feeling pretty smug about our run when we ran into another old runner friend of mine – Lia Knower. Once we heard about her 27 hour 100 mile run, we simply walked back home πŸ™‚

Oat meal!!

Another 5K in really humid Mumbai. Sitting at the breakfast table, I was wondering why oat meal in India tastes so much better than in US. Then I noticed the plate of Jilebi, aloo paratha with Chana dal and achar and the masala dosa surrounding it at my table πŸ™‚
I know what my Indian friends in US are thinking – “You pig! You deserve to run aimlessly” πŸ™‚
In my mind I am telling them “suit yourself” as I dig deeper into the two rasamalais πŸ™‚

Run in Bombay!!

Twenty years back in this city, I used to run in the morning so as to not miss the train to Andheri. I used to run to the Borivali bus depot not to miss the early BEST bus to Kandivali. Those were purposeful runs.
This morning, in the same city, I ran without any general purpose for 5K. Shaved off a minute a mile due to the flat terrain.
And as I did that, I twice almost ran into people running from cross streets. No doubt they were trying to catch a train or bus πŸ™‚

Run, Mimosa, Run, Wine!

Evidently the 5K run this morning was not enough (plus I had to burn down the two mimosas from the morning πŸ™‚ ). Went for a second run – this time 8K (5 miles) in the hills around my house. Now I am going to switch to wine πŸ™‚ I truly am a drunkard with a running problem πŸ™‚

College tax day!

After doing a lot off yard projects, Nikita and I were relaxing in the hammock by the pool. I wanted to tell her how much I will miss doing projects with her when she is off to college. Thinking about the day she will leave us for college, I asked her “Do you know what is the day I dread the most?”
“The day you have to give taxes”? she answered. πŸ™‚
Upon further reflection, I continued with my snooze in the hammock πŸ™‚

Upside down bunch of grapes

Thursday evening flying back home. Puzzle time.
Put 10 coins in four rows – top row has four coins, next has three, next has two and bottommost has one (will look a bunch of grapes – see the picture).
Now by moving only THREE coins, you have to get the bunch of grapes to look like upside down. (so, top row has one coin, next has two….)
This is not a trick question. The arrangement is exactly the same – but upside down.

Papal election!

“Black smoke emerges from Sistine Chapel indicating there is still no decision for a pope after second and third round ballots” reports CNN.
Where is the Florida Supreme Court when you really need it? πŸ™‚
