CallingItAsISeeIT: Really? That is why soccer is not popular in US?

There is a very interesting – and that is the most generous adjective I could come up with – analysis of why soccer is not popular here in US. Apparently, the problem is there are too many “draws”. And the solution suggested is to have judges giving points for every 15 minutes of play.

I have not followed soccer in a long time and am an avid NFL and College Football guy now. With that, let me say the following:

1. Soccer in the rest of the world is doing fine, thank you. They do not need any boost from us in terms of popularity.

2. I thought we used to complain about East Bloc judges and the whole system how gymnastics point system worked in the Olympics. I thought we do not believe the ref on the (American) football field and want to rely on the objective way of replay technologies. Why this change of heart and reliance on three judges?

3. The funniest part? TIME calls the world soccer body “insular” to changes of rules. Of course, we, who are throwing stones at other glass houses are the same ones that cannot put in my simple drug testing rules in our national sport or summarily dismiss who use epithets on people who unfortunately were born with the “wrong” skin color.

4. At some point of time, we have to understand that here, in this country, it is all about money. Nothing wrong about it. Money drives glamor and popularity and that drives what kids want to do. Btw, the recent rise of cricket’s popularity and India’s seizing the center stage from the traditional owners – England, is a great study of how money drives popularity.

5. So, who in this country drives that money? It is not the spectators. It is the advertisers!!!

6. And there is a lot of advertising in a (American) football game. A football is “live” for about 12 minutes in a game that lasts for 3 hours. Imagine the ad time on TV or in the stadium. Look at the time between pitches in baseball. And the interruptions in baseball.

7. I am rusted, but as I recollect, soccer is a lot more continuous and free flowing game. The ball is “live” for almost all the 90 minutes. (Other than half time). That is a nightmare scenario for me as a TV advertiser.

8. Till we have figured out how to stop the soccer game every time somebody has received a ball, I do not see much money in the game.

We are good at what we do but let’s leave them alone and let them play their own game. Sucks that it happens to be world’s most popular sport. But what do we care? If we can get one team from Canada to participate in our game, we can call our series the “World Series”. We do not need the rest of the world to call it World Cup. And frankly speaking, they do not need our help. They are doing fine.

Now let me get back to my off season trade analysis for the Falcons 🙂

FIL-MIL Mehfil: Score this one for my mother in law

Remember the Afghan cab driver I had chatted up in DC who was startled to find out that I knew about Ahmad Ali – who happened to have learnt music with him in Kabul together and escaped from Afghanistan together? And remember how I had struggled with a particular song of Ahmad Ali that I was sure was the same tune as a Nazrulgeeti that I had heard in my childhood and for the life of me, never could remember which?

Well, I had called my sister, held the phone next a YouTube blasting on my computer and she could not figure it out either. I reached out to a few more people who I thought might know. And completely hit a wall.

Enter my mother in law.

Last Friday, I was listening to songs and practicing some tabla when she came to the music room. So, we started listening to songs together and then out of a whim I had her listen to the Ahmad Ali song and asked her if it reminded her of any other song. To my complete amazement, she said she did. But struggled to remember the song. I was t*h*i*s close!!!

She kept giving me hints – male singer, words were like “laas dhuiyo laal paani diye” etc etc. Furious Googling led to nothing. Whatsoever 🙁

Saturday morning, as she walked into the kitchen, she said softly (she is a very soft spoken person), “I think it starts ‘Jedin Lobo Biday'”. Coffee be darned, I immediately jumped onto Google and YouTube. SURE ENOUGH!!! She had nailed the song. Found out the song on YouTube. Compared the tunes. Exactly the same!!!

Evidently, she had stayed up the previous night for sometime trying to rack her memory cells till she could remember the song!!

Now, that is my kind of mother in law!!!

You can check for yourself.

The Ahmad Ali song can be found here (start from 5:55 Mark) http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=o37CBES5cE4

And the Nazrulgeeti can be found here: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-H5xFEqFSxc

Uncanny, huh?

Quick and fast run. Fastest mile

Say what you may about Sheboygan. But its flat terrain by the lake is a runner’s morale booster. Aided by the flat ground and the fact I was trying to get the run over with since it was raining and I needed to find a way to pack wet clothes in my suitcase, posted a personal fastest mile.
I think I should start a running club here … call it Sheboygan club, of course. I might even invite all the three residents to it 🙂

A dart changed the course of her life!!!

Here is an interesting story from my travels of last week. My new friend Dan from my new job and I went out for dinner in Sheboygan when I was there early part of last week. There are not a lot of places to eat but Dan found us a nice place in Kohler called The Blind Horse which is a great restaurant. They have their own winery too!

As Dan and I started talking shop sitting at the bar over a drink, we got too engrossed to leave the bar. We canceled our reservation in the dining area and ordered food at the bar. After we were done, we started talking to the manager of the place – Yui – who was also helping at the bar that day.

She asked us where we were from and what we were doing in Sheboygan. BTW, I am yet to see another Indian in Sheboygan from my four days here 😉 So, no wonder, she was curious 🙂 Anyways, after we were done with our stories, I asked her about her journey. And I got the most fascinating story ever!

Yui was born in Japan and finished her school there. She had, at an early age, also visited Australia and stayed there for some time. Early on, she realized she did not like cities and crowd. She wanted the countryside and rural pace.

One day, her parents and siblings were at a bar in Japan that had a huge map of US. They were discussing about the places in US. None of them were much aware of US cities. Eventually, they started playing a dart game. On a whim, Yui came up with an idea – she said she would cover up all the crowded places in US and throw a dart. Wherever it landed, she was going to pursue higher studies there.

So they covered up all the places whose names they knew. The logic was if they knew about it, then it was famous and popular. If it was famous and popular, it had to be crowded. So, pretty much with California, New York, Florida, Dallas etc covered, Yui took a dart and as she put it “threw it as hard as I could”.

Upon closer inspection she saw that the dart had landed at some God-forsaken place called Kenosha. In the state of Wisconsin. This was the first time they found out there was a place called Kenosha. Or for that matter a state called Wisconsin. But that was it. She decided that she would study in Wisconsin. Her parents were totally cool with it.

A little research pointed her to Lakeland college nearby. It helped that they had a branch in Tokyo. She found out more information from that branch, applied and came over. She studied in Lakeland, met her husband here and now is managing the restaurant and winery.

What an outstanding story!!

Would you have the guts to let your life course be dramatically altered by the tip of a dart?

If any of you ever swing by The Blind Horse near Sheboygan, don’t forget to say Hi to her. She is also a great mixologist if you are into cocktails..

In all this excitement, Dan suddenly asked her something about the small place that we was from in Japan. Yui was surprised at the level of detail that Dan knew about her place. Finally Dan revealed his marine background and how he was stationed by her place for a few months.

Go figure!!!! What are the chances of that? He was stationed by the small place where she threw a dart to come to the place where he lives!!!

See, this is why I travel. This is why I love meeting people. This is why I love joining the dots!!!
