Feast befitting kings..

Apples, bananas, cookies, dates (strictly in alphabetical order) and much more. Hard earned food after a half marathon run. The 13.1 mile (21K ) run included climbing up 53 floors of hills. Arup’s first this year and my third. I got real real hungry around the ninth mile and he started cramping up with two miles left. We managed to still drag ourselves over the finish line. I am sure it had to do with the promise of apples, bananas, cookies and dates… 🙂

From the bartender’s corner – Gin #4: Wint and Lila

I was introduced to this gin last year by my good friend John who owns and runs one of my favorite haunts – Zola’s in Milton. I remember having the first taste and exclaiming – Wow! the Oranges!!

For the next two weeks this will be the Spanish gin I will be researching and experimenting different cocktails with.

First the history. The name is derived from one Juan de Wint and Margarita de Lila who had started one of earliest trading companies (with the East and Americas) back in the mid 1600s. The gin was named in their honor by the family of Casalbors who have run the distillery for nearly 200 years. It is situated in the port city of Puerto de Santa Maria in the Cadiz area of Spain.

Next the ingredients and the process: It has 10 botanicals – of course, juniper, coriander, angelica and angelica root and cinnamon which are staple for all gins. But additionally, it has orange peel, lemon peel, lime peel, peppermint and orange blossom. All these are mixed with corn and then distilled – not with direct heat or steam but water bath. This makes for a slow process but the botanicals retain all their richness. And then this is distilled five times over!!

One of the unique features of this gin is the bottle it comes in. The exterior is actually white clay and inside is glass!

The nose is rich with juniper and oranges. The palate continued with the orange and a hint of mint. The finish was distinctly citrusy.

Guess who I ran into?

In the evening after finishing up this week’s work, decided to go put in a few extra miles. Changed clothes in the trail bathroom and went in for the run. Somewhere in my second mile or so, I lifted by head and I thought I recognized the face of the runner who just passed me by the other way. Was it not Scott? I thought. Looked back but the runner kept on running.

For a few minutes, my mind meandered to thoughts about Scott. I had not seen for a long time. We used to work together. In fact, I wondered if he ever got my birthday wishes. It was his birthday a few days back and I had left a voice mail for him on his mobile phone. Made a mental note that I needed to shoot him an email to ensure that his phone number had not changed.

And that was that.

A few miles later, I turned around and was still a couple of miles away from my origin point, when I took a turn and ran into the same guy. This time, I was absolutely sure!! “Scott?”. “Rajib!”… We chatted for some time and I turned back again. We decided to run together to where he had kept his car and then he would drive me to where I had parked my car. In the meanwhile, we caught up on our lives.

After taking our mandatory picture together, I let him go. He was getting late in taking his parents out for dinner. Apparently, he takes his parents out for dinner almost every week. What a nice person!!
