Nikita confronts her birth!!

Sharmila and I were showing Nikita her sonogram and pictures from right after she was born. She had some of the most curious and hilarious questions.

She looked at her really pale picture a few minutes after birth, looked at me straight and asked “I was born an American”? ( I am like “Of course. What did you think?” It took me a second to realize she thought she was born white 🙂 )

She pointed to a clip near her navel. So I explained how she got oxygen before birth, the umbilical cord after birth and all that. She listened intently and then said “You mean to say you cut my ‘extension’ cord”? 🙂

Funny!

Running with old friends….

Second run with the WWRR group in two weeks. The last one was after two years. I am nothing if not unpredictable 🙂 Ran with good old Bill Smith for 5.5 miles early in the morning. And then joined the group for another 4 miles. It was great to see some of the old friends – Jeremy, Alan after a long time. Also made new friends – Eric, Carol, Claire…. Hope I will not have to wait for another two years for the next group run 🙂

They have been partying without me!!!

Five years I have been parking my car at the North Gold parking at Atlanta airport every single week. Have seen a lot of things – but an open wine bottle – pretty costly at that – with almost all the wine still in it – that is a first!!
Evidently, I have been missing all the real tailgate parties 🙂
I hope there will be some cheese left in front of my car when I return 🙂

And if it was not a party, then what were they thinking? If there is anything more dangerous than drinking and driving, it is drinking and parking. Accidents cause people 🙂 🙂

Touché again!!

Today is “wacky socks” day at school for Nikita. I am always delighted by the luxuries of life kids of our generation enjoy. Most of my school life, I had just one pair of socks. I suspect though, after the passage of certain time, they also became wacky :-).
As I came down the stairs this morning, I saw Nikita at the breakfast nook with these socks on. Just to get her charged up a little early in the morning, I loudly said “They live up to their name alright”.
She kept her calm – except as I passed her, I heard her muttering under her breath – “This, from the guy who shaves his head” 🙂

Touche again!

That was a record… of sorts… :-)

All my Bengali friends took a deserved day off since they ran in the 5K Vibha race yesterday. However, over dinner at a friend’s place last night, I met this really nice young Bengali gentleman from Shanghai who is visiting Atlanta and we agreed to run this morning. So, I will still consider it a Sunday morning Bengali Run for the record 🙂

We put in a 6.2 mile (10K) run at 8:44 min/mile pace. Dipanjan was kind enough to slow down for me. It was awesome weather (55 degrees).

Today’s records include:

1. First time ever I ran with somebody who lives in China. (Clearly, my running career is “peaking” – ha ha 🙂 )

2. Personal record of shortest time between befriending somebody and running with him/her – 13 hours flat (which is faster than I run :- ) and I am so going to get a lecture from Nikita on “stranger danger” today 🙂 )

3. First time I ever ran with an adult that does not have a Facebook account 🙂

Great start to a Sunday!!

Running…

So here is a puzzle that occurred to me while running yesterday (I know, I know, I need to get a life 🙂 ) Two runners start from point A and run at uniform (but different from each other) speeds to a point B exactly a mile apart and run back and keep doing this till they meet at either end (A or B). If their speeds are “m” mins/mile and “n” mins/mile (m not equal to n, and m and n are whole integers), how would you find out after how many minutes will they meet (they stop if they meet at A or B)?

That should teach me not to mess with a teenager :-)

This morning, I overheard Natasha (14 years) talking to her mom about some friend of hers breaking up with her boyfriend. I was half following the conversation when I heard her say “.. Boys are so mushy mushy”. In a valiant effort to defend my brethren, I immediately threw the penalty flag and engaged myself in the conversation. “What do mean boys are mushy mushy”, I ventured to ask. The response, befitting any self righteous teenager (which I think means all of them ), was swift and garrulous 🙂 The flurry of words ended with something like “… He was overdoing the boyfriend thing”. Not to be cowed down, I pressed on

I: “How do you know when he is “overdoing” it?”.

Tasha: “Well, when the boy becomes possessive”.

I: “All boys become possessive of their girlfriends. I know I was”.

Tasha: “And see how well they turned out for you”.

Touche!

[Mentally, I was like “Dang it, Rajib, next time stick to engaging in verbal duels with Nikita (8 years). You cannot out speak a teenager and it is absolutely pointless to do so with the wife anyways. Invariably it will end with a sigh and a “Fine” which means you have inevitably reached the point where it is anything but” :-)]

Vibha 2012 Race

Ran the 5K Vibha Dream Mile Race today. Our Sunday morning Bengali crowd was there – Samaresh and Paroma, Amitesh and Sharmila joined in the 5K race. As did Gouranga and Sudipta ! Youngster Paroma ranked high enough to win a award (I missed the ceremony though). Esha, Sreya, Mistu and Anusuya did the 5K walk.

That was one hilly route. Made the mistake of starting fast (7:31min/mile pace). Had to slow down to finish off at 8:02 min/mile pace average. (24 min 29 secs).
